Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a very common standard treatment for periodontal disease. It’s actually a nonsurgical deep cleaning that removes tartar, plaque and bacteria from the entire tooth at and below the gumline, including the tooth roots. The process also promotes healthy gum tissue regeneration snugly around your tooth.

In some cases, Dr. DeSantis may decide that surgical treatment of your periodontal disease is your best therapeutic option due to the severity of your gum infection. A common surgical option is called gum flap surgery, which requires a surgical cut in the gum tissue. The resulting flap is then pulled back to allow deep cleaning around the roots. Dr. DeSantis then sutures the flap back into place in order to heal.

Alternative surgical options for treating periodontal disease include guided tissue regeneration, soft tissue grafts and special tissue-stimulating proteins.
